At the age of 35 I had a stroke which really knocked my confidence within myself. I suddenly felt very vulnerable within my body and wasn't sure how I was going to find my way back to myself. There are so many feelings you go through when you have a stroke. I found myself with anxiety, grief for my old self and a sense of uncertainty for my future. To help get myself through this I turned to my yoga practice, I learned more about trauma and how it affects your body which has helped me to understand my body on a deeper level. I believe my yoga practice has helped with my recovery and my mindset throughout this traumatic time. I'm here to show you how you can do the same and regain your confidence within yourself after a stroke.

Regaining your confidence & life after stroke,
A holistic & embodied approach to recovery
Having a stroke is a traumatic experience that can affect your life in many different ways. This programme is designed by a stroke survivor for stroke survivors. All the practices that you will learn in this programme helped me through my own recovery and I'm so excited to be able to share them with you. When I first came out of hospital I felt very vulnerable, lost and confused. I didn't know why I'd had a stroke at that point and I felt very unsafe in my own body. I eventually found my way back to myself through my Yoga practice and I decided to learn more about trauma and how this affects your body. I've learned techniques to help me deal with the difficult emotions that come with having a stroke and I put practices in place to help me on my recovery. This programme is designed to help you regain confidence within yourself and move forward with your life in a healthy way. You can check out more information on the programme & content below.
During our first week together we will start with bringing more awareness in to your body. I will guide you through a focusing practice. You will learn how to use this practice when difficult emotions arise.
Did you know you have the power to regulate your nervous system? In this session you will learn different breathing techniques that will help you to calm your nervous system and bring you back to a regulated state.
Fatigue can be a challenging side effect of a stroke. In this session we'll begin to look at Yoga Nidra which is sometimes called yogic sleep. With this, and a restorative Yoga session you will learn how to rest deeply.
Mantra can help you to quiet and focus your mind, it is an incredible way to heal your body. During this session you will learn different Mantras to help you on your recovery.
In this session we'll begin to look at how you see and talk to yourself. You will learn about Loving Kindness Meditations and how this can help you to have more compassion towards yourself.
Life can change dramatically after having a stroke. You may feel grief for your old self and life. In this last session we will look at letting go of this way of thinking and begin to work on acceptance.
Once you have signed up you will receive a welcome email inviting you to The Life After Stroke members site
You will then have full access to the 6 modules of the programme material
There is a video which explains what you will work on in each module and a document which gives you your homework for that module
There are two movement practice videos for each module (except module 3). You can pick which level is suitable for you or feel free to try both!
There are also some bonus videos/audios for you to watch and listen to at your leisure
My suggestion is to work through this course on a weekly basis - each module has something new for you to learn. Allow yourself time for the learnings to settle in. By working in this way you will be able to integrate these learnings into your life giving you the best results
Given my hesitation about Yoga prior to my stroke it was WAY out of my comfort zone to participate in this programme with my newly acquired limitations. That said, Anna cultivates a safe environment for even a Yoga novice. The universality of having a stroke brings us together as survivors, yet the need for each individual to respect their own strengths, challenges, pace & reality is encouraged by Anna. I had only been aware of the physical aspect of Yoga, but Anna brought forth the gentle healing that can come from other essential aspects of Yoga - be it breathing, mantra, self compassion or otherwise. Healing is not linear & so much of what needs to heal is invisible to others. This programme helped me to begin working on those things. I plan to continue using what Anna has shared, showed, demonstrated & has lived herself. None of us know what others have gone or are going through, but Anna has tapped in to her own experience as both a Yoga teacher & a stroke survivor to create a special safe haven for even the most insecure & biggest skeptic.

YES! I've designed this programme with stroke survivors in mind, there are two different movement videos so you can pick which one is appropriate to you. I also have some students that have taken things from each video as they've found themselves somewhere in-between the two!
No, I've designed this programme with beginners in mind. So whether you're new to Yoga or you've done it before everyone is welcome here!
I have a much longer answer to this question on a blog post I wrote which you can find here. However a shortened answer would be Yoga can help with your physical recovery like balance and working on stretches to help with spasticity and can also help with the psychological side of having stroke. This programme is designed to encompass all aspects of stroke recovery.
